Derby Lane began in 1925 and is family owned and operated since its inception. In the racing circuit, Derby is known as the world’s oldest, continuously operated greyhound track in the world.
Derby Lane is regulated by The Division of Pari-Mutuel Wagering, a program area of the Department of Business and Professional Regulation within the Executive Branch of Florida’s Government. It regulates all pari-mutuels including, harness racing, thoroughbred, quarter horses, greyhounds and jai-alai, all card rooms, slot machines. The gaming industry as authorized by Florida Statues. Pari-mutuel wagering was authorized by the legislature in 1931.
Hurricane Irma Hit Tampa Bay on Sept. 2017. Derby Lane stepped in and allowed 1st Responders to use their property. On the average 400 trucks and 850 personnel used the facility as Ground Zero. At the highest numbers 850 trucks with 1900 personnel were fed 3 meals a day. For the first 4 to 5 days Derby Lane was the default location, until other staging sites were set. Derby Lane was the first to open and the last to close.

On track, there are 15 different racing kennels; each kennel is privately owned and hires their own personnel. Derby Lane is prohibited by law to own racing greyhounds. DerbyLane donates one of the kennels to Greyhound Pets of America for adoptions. If Amendment 13 passes, the estimated loss would equate to more than 50% of Derby Lane employees employees.
